“Everything You Buy Makes Everything You Own a Little Less Valuable.”*

Heavy energy permeates into your mental and emotional space.

I’m a teacher, so I have summers off. Every year, I have a to-do list. Some of the things are chores that need to get done that were put off during the school year because of a lack of time or mental bandwidth to take care of them in the moment. Others are fun things such as taking a train across Colorado or looking up all the summer movies and going to the theater to watch the ones I am excited about. The one thing that’s on my list every year is to declutter and organize some part of my house. I’m not so much a “keep buying things” mentality as I am a “I can still use this” mentality, even when I don’t.

This year was no different. I went through the kitchen and my den and got rid of a bunch of things that I no longer use, or in some cases, never used. 6 boxes worth of stuff, to be exact. The Angels have told me repeatedly that if you have things that aren’t used, the energy of those things gets heavy. That heavy energy permeates into your mental and emotional space. Things are meant to be used, and when we are done with them, they should be given away or recycled.

Marie Kondo talks extensively about getting rid of anything that doesn’t give you joy. There are many things I own that don’t bring me joy, such as my vacuum, filing cabinet, heating pad, or canvas bags, but they are helpful and make my life easier. I’m grateful in that way, but joyful I am not.

However, when I was going through a bunch of boxes in the closet, I felt the joy of the items being exposed to the light for the first time in years. Those were the things I knew that I had to give away. They were created to be something, and when they are stuffed in a drawer, box, or closet, I deny them the ability to reach their potential. If everything is energy, then denying that energy the ability to express itself becomes heavy and dark.

I recently read a New York Times article that said, “Everything you buy makes everything you own a little less valuable.” This really hit home for me. It reminds me of eating my favorite food. The first bite is so yummy I can’t help but say "yum," but by bite 10 that feeling is long gone, and by bite 20 I feel uncomfortable because I’m so full. This just reinforced what the Angels have been telling me. I need to be more mindful not only of what I have in my house but what I bring into the house.

Our culture makes it so easy to buy new things. We don’t even have to leave our house. We look at an online store, click buy, and it shows up on our porch a couple of days later. While it’s super convenient, it often prevents us from being mindful of what we are purchasing. This leads us to purchase more than what we need. Then we feel overwhelmed by all of the stuff, making room for it, cleaning it, storing it, and in my case, moving it from one house to another.

I tend to buy things on sale. You know those BOGO, Pick 5 food items, or something super cheap, like back-to-school sales. This is where I get into trouble. I have so much stuff that I forgot I had, so I buy it again, spend a ton of time looking for it, or toss it because it’s dried out or expired. I’m not sure that when I factor in my time, I have really “saved” anything.

I have so much food that for June and July, I only bought 3 perishable items total. It hardly looked like I made a dent in how much food I had in the house. One of the great things I realized the last 2 months is how creative I can be, and how interchangeable ingredients are when I’m using up what I already have.

Decluttering always makes my house feel better. Now that I know that everything I buy makes everything I own a little less valuable, it’ll help me be more mindful of what I bring into the house so I don’t end up back here again next summer.

How can you be more mindful of your purchases so you don’t end up like me, decluttering every summer?

I’d love to hear your comments below.

Anyone can do these things on their own, but sometimes we enjoy practicing with others like us.
