Peace and Kindness Amongst All the Chaos.

Updated: Apr 2

In many of my sessions, clients have shown a concern about the chaos, cruelty, and violence going on in the world and our communities. So many of us are feeling unsafe and worry that our world has become more dangerous.  This feels like this is the worst time in history. I, too, have found myself feeling anxious, angry, and hopeless at times. I'm reminded of a quote from Yoda in The Phantom Menace:

"Fear is the path to the dark side...fear leads to anger...anger leads to hate...hate leads to suffering."

The Angels remind me that most of what we see in the news is slanted towards attention-grabbing headlines, where clickbait is prevalent. Their philosophy is that if it bleeds, it leads. The algorithms in our social media accounts are also designed to keep you on the platform. Violence, chaos, conflict, anger, and fear are powerful motivators to keep you tuned in, meaning higher ratings and more money. This is only a small part of what’s going on in the world. What’s really going on more than anything in the world is love, kindness, helping neighbors, welcoming strangers, and doing the right thing for the right reasons, which doesn’t sell or attract viewership.

People have a variety of ways to communicate their dissatisfaction with current events in the world and in their communities. There are many ways you can show that you don't agree with a situation and want to make the world a better place. The Angels remind me that what we focus on grows. If you focus on the hatred, violence, and cruelty, we will have more of that. If you focus on love, kindness, and generosity, we will have more of that.

Here are some inspiring things I’ve heard recently:

A quilting group makes and donates quilts for those living in their cars and to veterans.

During a flood and power outage, a restaurant chose to make all the food that was going to spoil and handed out meals to the town for free.

On a snowy day, a policeman saw that a homeless man didn’t have shoes, so he bought the man a pair and helped him put them on.

A group of knitters made hats for people in Minnesota to help them keep warm.

A guy was stuck in a parking lot because his battery died. A woman grabbed her jumper cables and jumped him so he wouldn’t have to wait an hour for a tow truck.

Many people created GoFundMe pages and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to people whose houses were burned in a wildfire.

People donated clothes, food, diapers, and offered their homes for temporary shelter when hundreds of people were flooded out of their homes.

A neighbor in NYC shovelled the 11+ inches of snow for neighbors who couldn’t do it themselves.

The mayor of NYC helped New Yorkers unbury their cars from the snow drifts caused by the snow plows.

Two men pulled a dog that had fallen through the ice on a lake.

An 8-year-old girl set up a lemonade stand to help pay for her mom’s chemotherapy.

A group of elementary school students sang, “I Am Not Okay,” by Jelly Roll, and posted it online for the senior high school, which recently endured a school shooting.

A Secret Santa has given away hundreds of one-hundred-dollar bills to people who look like they needed the money for Christmas.

A band class heard that their teacher lost his father, created a meal train sign-up sheet, brought him dinners for a week, and made a card to let him know how much they cared about him and his family.

A student saw another student being bullied in the hallway, told his peers to stop, and proceeded to walk that student to class.

A bunch of middle school football players encircled a fledgling player so he could get a touchdown.

A man in Detroit spends most of his weekends cleaning up overgrown and abandoned properties and sidewalks because they are a safety hazard to the neighborhood.

A woman saw that the mother in front of her didn’t have enough money to pay for her groceries. She paid the balance of the bill, so the mom of 3 didn’t have to put any food back.

Please share what good deeds you have seen in your neighborhood. We need to be more aware of all the great things people are doing to help their neighbors. Note: The comments section is at the bottom of this page.

Anyone can do these things on their own, but sometimes we enjoy practicing with others like us.
