The Power of Seeing Beyond the Surface: Why We Should Judge Not by Appearances

Judge not by appearances.

According to The American Heritage® Dictionary, Judgment is the formation of an opinion after consideration or deliberation. This approach would be great if this were what really happened. In reality, we make snap judgments without any deliberation at all. We judge things quickly to match our biases, our code of morality, or based on who told us the information. The problem is that “judgment” says that a person, behavior, or idea “has no right to be.” Discernment says, “It’s not right for me.” (Ann Albers)

In the 1990s, the news was full of:

Talk about “Super Predators,"

Opinions that crime was going to get worse and worse,

And that these “super predators” were going to take over our country.

The problem was that this never came to pass. In fact, crime went down. There are lots of theories as to why, but none of them (better or more policing, 3 strikes laws, reduction in drug use) hold up to statistical muster.

During a typical summer, crime tends to go up. A large group of people practicing Transcendental Meditation decided to do a study to see if it would reduce crime in the DC area. The study was called the “Effects of Group Practice of the Transcendental Meditation Program on Preventing Violent Crime in Washington, DC: Results of the National Demonstration Project, June–July 1993”

They found that the more participants practiced Transcendental Meditation, the lower the crime rate. The crime rate went down between 15.6% in the first week to 24.6% in the final week. And continued to stay down for some time after the experiment. They refer to this phenomenon as the Maharishi Effect. This leads to the question: if a group of people can reduce crime in a huge urban city by just seeing crime go down, what are we as a population “seeing” to make it go up? If we are told that crime goes up, we believe it and fear it, and then it does. This is the law of attraction.

Okay, so what does this have to do with spirituality or mediumship? In the Bible, John 7:24, “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge the righteous judgment.” Things on Earth appear to be a certain way, but when you look from a higher perspective, you start to see things differently, just as you do when you see footage from a drone rather than a camera on the ground. Earth looks much different from outer space than on the ground!

One thing that the most recent election tells me is to not judge by appearances. There’s a reason the elections turned out the way they did. Things need to be shaken up. The status quo isn’t working. People are angry about their lives not working, the economy, and, apparently, their health insurance.

The reaction of a murdered CEO struck a nerve in the population, highlighting how powerless they feel when facing huge, for-profit insurance companies that deny, delay, and depose claims so they don’t have to pay. I have always seen this model as a conflict of interest. It’s not in their interest to pay all the claims because it affects their bottom line. Up until 1973, when Nixon signed the Health Maintenance Organization Act, insurance, hospitals, clinics, and doctors were all non-profit service organizations. Greed is not good, especially when people's lives are at stake. Hopefully, this will be a wake-up call to health insurance companies, congress, and the people to change this broken system.   Note: this is not a call for violence! Violence is NEVER the answer.

What other things do we judge?

We judge ourselves for not being perfect, feel things we “shouldn’t,” (anger, jealousy, sadness, or fear), or tell ourselves it’s our fault when others mistreat us. We judge others for worshiping differently than we do. We get told to stay “in your lane” when we are called to do something different or to call out bad behavior. We also judge ourselves for wanting to do and be different. We question and doubt ourselves because our dreams or ideas have never been done before or are different from our expectations when we were young. Hint: nothing new has ever been done without someone thinking outside the box or doing something weird or "crazy." Remember that when you do what you are encouraged by our Spirit Guides or Angels, you feel happier and more fulfilled. Life also tends to be easier.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant stream of bad news (wars, crime, violence, hatred) that constantly bombards us. We as light-workers have a job to do to see the light in others, even when they can't see it in themselves, to see that the light always follows the darkness, and to share our light.

Little acts of kindness go a long way. A simple smile or hello to everyone we see may make someone’s day, helping the mom in line with a few bucks so she doesn’t have to put back some of her groceries, getting donuts for your co-workers, asking how can I help when someone we know is in distress. All of these things have a ripple effect. But first, we need to remember to judge the righteous judgment and get involved where our Spirit Guides and Angels direct us. We are not meant to "fix" the darkness, just shine a light on it. This is what the Maharishi Effect is all about: seeing and believing that things are better for everyone. Then, it will come to pass.

Anyone can do these things by themselves, but sometimes we like to practice with others like us. I am rerunning the Awakening Your Intuition Through the Clairs 2 at Aims in Greeley from February 02 - March 12, 2025. I am running a Beginning Mediumship class on Saturday, March 29 - April 12 from 9-11 AM and Awakening Your Intuition Through the Clairs at the Loveland Aims campus. I will also be at the Belu Olisa Fair at the Ranch, on March 15th and 16th 2025 from 10 am to 5 pm both days.

I would love it if you would share the things that have worked for you, being supportive of each other, and cheering each other on. Note: The comments section is at the bottom of this page.

Until Next Time,
